PHANTASY This project uses cloth and stitch to make a small concertina display book, which will be filled with your own designs and flights of fancy.
You will begin to build and decorate the individual pages, and also learn ways of joining them together. I will provide all the base materials for the structure of the book, and you will need to bring along all those wonderful scraps of fabric that youve been saving, your colourful threads, delicious beads, and attachments of all sorts. Then you can go wild with imagination and create your own phenomenal phantasy.
a bunch of small fabric pieces for collage
I use very bright clear colours, mostly cotton, as thats easiest to handle.
go for contrast and variety, in colour and pattern
also a small amount of glitzy and / or floaty stuff ( eg. organza ) and little bits of lace, ribbon, or trims
found objects, like beads, buttons, bits of old earrings, any odd things you collect
threads for hand stitching
..I use mostly cotton perle no. 8 or similar weight, but you can use whatever you like. make sure you have some sewing machine thread for sewing on attachments. bring needles to suit your threads.
bring all your usual tools of the trade
..scissors, pins, etc bring some drawing paper and pencils, and small paper scissors
I will provide all the base materials for building the pages at a cost of $15 each
My samples are built on brightly coloured flannelette, which I will have available for you to use, but if you prefer to use a base of some other fabric, please bring your own.
I have used childrens drawings as my theme, simple bold images and colours, but thats only an example.
Let your imagination drift
think about using flowers, birds, animals, fish, cups teapots, shoes, stars, ducks, tools, vegetables, fruit, numbers, letters, houses
..
I also use faces, printed on to fabric ( I ll show you how and provide images ) You could provide your own, if you want to use faces of real people. Photos need to be clear, high contrast b / w images, and they need to be photocopied.
approximate size of working surface is 110 x 150 mm
