shaped folding books built with cloth and stitch

create your own story – truth or fiction – using colour, texture, image, and words on the fold out pages of your own wild and wonderful book construction.
essential construction materials provided by the tutor.

Lesson Plan

we will construct each 'page' separately using your chosen materials, and then learn several different ways of joining these pieces together.
I'll show you how to transfer an image to fabric, should you want to use this technique in your work.

Requirement List

a bunch of small fabric pieces for collage, and some larger pieces for backgrounds………I use mostly cotton, as that’s easiest to handle. go for contrast and variety, in colour and pattern, or stuff to fit with your theme.
also small amounts of glitzy stuff, and little bits of lace, ribbon, or trims found objects, like beads, buttons, bits of old earrings, any odd things you collect
threads for hand stitching……..I use mostly cotton perle no. 8 or similar weight, but you can use whatever you like. make sure you have some sewing machine thread for sewing on small attachments, like beads. bring needles to suit your threads.
some vliesofix
bring all your usual tools of the trade……..scissors, pins, etc
bring some drawing paper and pencils, and small paper scissors
I will provide all the base materials for building the pages at a cost of $12 each
Let your imagination drift on a theme………think about using flowers, birds, teapots, letters, people, your family and friends, travel, houses, any story that appeals to you
I also use faces, transferred on to fabric ( I ‘ll show you how ) You could provide your own, if you want to use faces of real people. Photos need to be clear, high contrast b / w images, and they need to be photocopied.
